Educational Leave

Some agencies have an established Educational Leave With Pay Program that provides eligible employees with paid, time off to study at a college, university or training academy for one or more full academic periods.

Agency Educational Leave With Pay programs must meet the following objectives:

  • Develop participating employees' knowledge, skills and ability to meet agency needs.
  • Improve performance of the participating employee and benefit the agency overall.
  • Improve the agency's ability to serve the public.

To be eligible for the program, the proposed training must align with the agency's plan objectives, you must be a state employee for one continuous year and you must meet all entrance requirements of the academic program. To remain a program participant, you also must maintain satisfactory progress and agree to be employed with the state for the same amount of time the leave is taken. If not, you will be required to reimburse the state for all or part of the monies you received.

Educational leave with pay is subject to agency approval. Check with your agency Human Resources office to see if it sponsors a program and how to apply.
